Frequently Asked Questions about Drivetrains for MG – Transmission Spare Parts

How do I know if my MG needs a new drive shaft?

The most common symptoms are heavy vibrations under acceleration or unusual noises coming from underneath the vehicle. If the vibrations stop when you release the accelerator, an inner CV joint or the drive shaft itself is usually the culprit.

Do all CV joints fit every MG model?

No, CV joints vary in size, spline tooth count and length depending on the model and engine variant. Always use our make, model and engine selector to find the correct part for your specific MG.

What is the difference between an inner and outer CV joint on an MG?

The outer CV joint sits closest to the wheel and allows for steering, whereas the inner CV joint is located closest to the gearbox and accommodates suspension movement. Worn outer joints typically click when turning, whereas worn inner joints produce vibrations.

Can I replace just the CV boot if it is split?

Yes, if you catch a split CV boot early before road dirt has damaged the joint itself, replacing the boot and repacking it with fresh grease is often sufficient. If the joint has already started making noise, the entire CV joint must be replaced.

Why is the correct tooth count on the ABS ring important?

The ABS ring on the CV joint sends signals to the car's braking system. If the number of teeth does not match the vehicle's original specification, the ABS system will trigger an error light or malfunction.

Do you supply drive shafts for the MG ZR?

Yes, we have a dedicated range for the MG ZR that includes both complete drive shafts and outer CV joints tailored to the model's exact specifications.
