How do I know if my Volkswagen Touran needs a new drive shaft?
The most common symptoms are vibrations through the vehicle when accelerating or persistent noises from underneath. If the vibrations stop as soon as you let off the throttle, a worn inner CV joint or the drive shaft itself is often to blame.
What is the difference between an inner and outer CV joint on a Touran?
The outer CV joint is located by the wheel and typically emits a clicking or knocking noise when turning if worn. The inner constant velocity joint sits at the gearbox and usually causes chassis vibrations under acceleration.
Does the same drive shaft fit both manual and DSG gearboxes?
No, there are often differences in both length and mounting between manual and automatic (DSG) gearboxes. Always select your car's make, model and engine to find the correct version for your vehicle.
Does my Volkswagen Touran have a propeller shaft?
Only models equipped with 4Motion all-wheel drive have a propeller shaft. Most standard Touran models are front-wheel drive and therefore do not have a prop shaft.
Why is it important to replace a damaged CV boot immediately?
The boot keeps lubricating grease inside and road dirt out. If it splits, the CV joint is quickly ruined by grit and water, leading to a far more expensive repair than simply replacing the CV boot.
Can a faulty CV joint affect the ABS system?
Yes, on many Touran models the ABS ring is mounted directly onto the outer CV joint. If the ring cracks or corrodes, the ABS sensor receives incorrect signals, triggering the warning light on the dashboard.
